2022-23 Schreyer Snapshots Enjoy these photos from Schreyer Honors College’s 2022-23 academic year. Hundreds of new Scholars took part in SHO TIME when they arrived on campus in August. The Honors College’s annual orientation program offered numerous activities over two days designed to set the Scholars up for success at Schreyer and Penn State. The College celebrated its 25th anniversary at September’s Founders Day event. Attendees celebrated the Schreyer community with musical performances, treats like cake and ice cream, a prize wheel, and the presentation of the Scholar Involvement Award. In September, Scholars from Penn State Harrisburg took a kayaking trip on Swatara Creek. Ace, a Siberian Husky and certified therapy dog, made multiple visits to Atherton Hall over the last year. Scholars and staff members alike relished the chance to decompress with Ace. Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi wrapped up her first fall semester on campus by speaking to the fall 2022 Scholar’s Medal recipients in a ceremony at the HUB’s Alumni Hall. In January, Schreyer welcomed Elizabeth Nyamayaro to present the annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture. An award-winning humanitarian and author, Nyamayaro talked about the philosophy of ubuntu which means, “I am because we are” and encouraged the audience to “dare to dream a dream for others.” A new student organization, the International and Multicultural Association of Schreyer Scholars (IMASS) hosted a Lunar New Year festival inside Atherton Hall’s Grandfather Clock Lounge. March saw 32 Scholar alumni return to University Park for Connect Networking and Career Day. They strengthened the Schreyer community and fostered important relationships by sharing their professional expertise with the Scholars who attended. Building Belonging is a series of workshops for Scholars who lead student organizations. The workshops feature discussions and activities that are designed to elevate their skills. Hosted in the fall and spring by Scholar alumnus Spud Marshall, Building Belonging also connects current Scholars with State College community leaders. In February and March, Dean Mather hit the road for a set of Meet the Dean events. At stops in Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, Scholar alumni had a chance to share their thoughts about the Honors College with the Dean and hear about his vision for Schreyer. Building on the popularity of the Donuts with the Dean events, the Honors College debuted Paint with Pat to help Scholars connect with each other and Dean Mather. Hosted by Penn State’s Center for Arts and Crafts, Paint with Pat sessions took place near the end of the fall and spring semesters to offer some relaxation during a busy time in the year. With help from all the encouraging dancer mail they received, Grace Sibley ’23 and Kelsey Shekore ’25 made it through all 46 hours as this year’s THON dancers representing Schreyer Student Council. They were part of a record-breaking $15 million fundraising effort benefiting the Four Diamonds Fund and the fight against pediatric cancer. Watch for emails next winter for information on sending dancer mail for THON 2024. In April, Penn State Berks Scholars Lillie Mohn (L) and Jenicy Strong (R) traveled to Penn State Altoona for the Women in Engineering Design competition. The pair claimed first place – and a $3,000 prize – for their efforts in the three-round competition that featured a theme on Altoona’s famous “Horseshoe Curve.” Dana Hallahan, a Scholar from Penn State Brandywine who majored in biology, presented her thesis, “Selective Blocking of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels in the Frog Optic Nerve” at her campus’s Socratic Symposium. Hundreds of Scholars visited Atherton Hall’s Grandfather Clock Lounge in May for Thesis Days. For two days, the gong rang out in celebration of graduating Scholars successfully completing their theses. At the end of the academic year, Penn State Behrend held a banquet for all of its Scholars and celebrated those who were graduating in May. Schreyer Student Council’s spring coffeehouse event featured Dean Mather performing some of his favorite songs along with refreshments, and conversation. The Medals Ceremony kicked off graduation weekend where Scholars across the Commonwealth celebrated the culmination of their Penn State journeys. Pictured are Scholar alumni Eemonie Moore, who graduated with a psychology degree, and Penn State Altoona honors program coordinator Laura Rotunno. In May, nearly 500 Scholars took part in the spring Medals Ceremony at the Bryce Jordan Center.
