In September, historian, author and professor Timothy Snyder (R) held a lecture as part of the inaugural Dilemmas of Democracy. The lecture included a Q&A session moderated by Gary Abdullah (L), Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the Bellisario College of Communications. Dilemmas educated Scholars on the challenges facing modern democracy through multiple faculty-led discussions, with Snyder’s lecture as the kick-off to the yearlong program. In November, Scholars from University Park took a day trip to the historic Fallingwater landmark. The group enjoyed exploring the site’s natural landscape and historic architecture. Schreyer Student Council hosted a Creating Your Future workshop to connect current Scholars with distinguished Schreyer alumni. The event featured an alumni panel that shared valuable career advice and goal-setting strategies with attendees. In April, the Schreyer Medical Team took a day trip to Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey. The team had the unique opportunity to experience the college’s curriculum first-hand by attending classes alongside medical students. Altoona Scholar Jackson Boyer celebrating the completion of his thesis by ringing the gong.Numerous Schreyer staff members presented at the 2024 Honors Education at Research Universities (HERU) bi-annual conference. The topics they covered included student aid counseling, building community through philanthropy, strengthening a sense of belonging with peer-led instruction, strategic planning, mentoring and recruiting via early pathway programs. During Whiteout weekend, current Scholars and Scholar alumni joined Dean Mather for the first-ever Distance with the Dean run. The group completed a three-mile course from Atherton Hall to Beaver Stadium. Scholar Ethan McCarthy organized the run as a way for Scholars and the Dean to connect over a shared interest.Schreyer for Women’s Evening In Conversation event featured keynote speakers President Neeli Bendapudi (standing, center) and former Miss America Nina Davuluri (standing, far right). Throughout the evening, the pair discussed their experiences in leadership as women of color and explored the importance of promoting inclusivity for female-identifying students at Penn State. In January, Schreyer welcomed Ainissa Ramirez to present the annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture. A renowned scientist and author, Ramirez discussed the impact of scientific inquiry across cultures, and detailed how advancements in technology affect the human experience. Daniel Abramov, a Scholar from Penn State Berks, presented his poster “Effects of DSK and CCKLR Deletion on Lipid and Carbohydrate Storage and Feeding in Drosophila melanogaster” at the Higher Education Council of Berks County’s Research and Creativity Conference.Dean Mather took a spring trip to Tampa, Florida for a Meet the Dean event. Scholar alumni who attended had the chance to discuss the Dean’s current vision for honors education at Penn State and learn more about the future of Schreyer. A group of graduating University Park Scholars ringing the gong during Gong Days.The college held its annual Celebration of Philanthropy event to commemorate the generosity of those whose gifts help to strengthen the College. Scholar Viviana Davila, a 2024 graduate who earned a bachelor of science degree in nutritional sciences and psychology, gratefully shared her story that showcased the impact of these gifts on her Penn State career. In December, Schreyer organized Relaxation Week, a series of events designed to help reduce stress at the end of the semester. As part of the week’s festivities, local artist Chip Mock stopped by to illustrate caricature drawings of Scholars. April saw over 300 high school students and their families travel to University Park to learn more about Schreyer at the College’s spring Scholars Day event. Part of their experience that day was hearing from a panel of current Scholars who discussed what life at Penn State and Schreyer is like for them. In May, more than 450 Scholars gathered for the spring Medals Ceremony at the Bryce Jordan Center. Along with receiving their medals, graduating Scholars and their families enjoyed a pre-ceremony reception on the Bryce Jordan Center concourse.
